Businesses from virtually every industry deal with some sort of complex process or system that is essential to what they do, but difficult to explain to someone with no background knowledge of the industry. Infographics are one of the best marketing tools out there for explaining intricate processes. An infographic by definition is a visual representation of information or data. Basically, they make complicated processes and information much simpler and easy to understand through the use of graphics.

As Emily explained in her article this month, infographics are a great way to keep your customers informed and combat information overload. Here are five tips for utilizing the power of infographics to explain something to your customers:

  1. Keep it Simple – The main point of an infographic is to simplify. Your customer should have a relatively good understanding of the information you are trying to convey after looking at your infographic. Don’t get overly technical with your wording. Remember you are just trying to get them to grasp the core idea.
  2. First Things First – In Emily’s article, she mentions creating a hierarchy of information for your infographic. This means focussing on the most important information right away and working your way down to the least essential information. Infographics should be as concise and “to-the-point” as possible so think carefully about the order of your infographic.
  3. Tell a Story – Most of the time infographics contain multiple steps of a process or main points. Quality infographics should flow effortlessly between these steps or points. As Emily mentioned in her article, they should read like a story. Good stories have a clear beginning, middle and end that intertwine to create a central theme. Infographics are no different. The key points should work cohesively to communicate the overall idea or process.
  4. Visual Appeal – The key word in “infographic” is “graphic.” The main reason they are so successful is due to the fact that they use imagery to illustrate the information. Therefore, an effective infographic must have high quality designs. Some infographic designs may simply illustrate each step of a process literally. Others may use a visual analogy to compare the complex process to a more simple, everyday process. Either way you are going to want a legitimate graphic designer in your corner.
  5. Promote It – Once your infographic is complete, the next step is getting it in front of your customers. As with all forms of marketing, the more mediums you can use to expose your audience to your infographic, the better. Good, interesting infographics make the perfect content for your website, blog, social media platforms and print materials. The more places that your customers have a chance to see your infographic, the more it will sink in and have an effect on them.
